Ethnomusicology Goes to Middle
August 15, 2014
Section of the Society for Ethnomusicology is pleased to announce a call for
presentations for the 2014 Ethnomusicology Goes to Middle School outreach event
scheduled to take place on Wednesday, November
12th, 2014 as part of the SEM Annual Meeting in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. This event brings educators and
ethnomusicologists to a local school to share participatory music-making
activities from diverse musical cultures with middle school students.
Presenters typically share 30-minute lessons on a topic of their expertise with
groups of 15-20 students. Potential presenters should submit
proposals adhering to the following guidelines. Submissions not adhering to
these guidelines will be automatically rejected.
Please send an email with the subject heading
"SEM Schools Submission" and attach
a PDF or Word document including the following information:
name, academic association (or independent status) and position. If you are a
student please list your current degree program.
2. A brief
explanation of your previous experience in working with K-12 age
children.This should not exceed 1 paragraph.
of presentation, including musical culture that will be presented.
4. A brief
description or outline of what you will cover in your presentation, including
examples of activities the children will participate in. This should not exceed
2 paragraphs or half a page of outline.
5. A brief
list of materials you are interested in using. Please note that while
every attempt will be made to secure materials and instruments, not all
requests may be granted. You will be notified if particular materials
will not be available.
All submissions must be received
by midnight, August 15th, 2014.
Notification of acceptance will
be sent electronically by September 1st, 2014.
