Monday, April 3, 2017
Posted by: Marysol Quevedo
We are extending the submission deadline for the Spring/Summer issue of SEM Student News (Vol. 13, No. 1) to Friday, April 14, to encourage more participation from both student and working scholars. We are seeking submissions addressing the practice of ethnomusicology today, in 2017, and any pressing topics that concern you as students and scholars, your collaborators and interlocutors, and/or the field as a whole. Our aim is to bring together a wide variety of ideas and viewpoints within a single, open-themed issue, drawing attention to topics perhaps overlooked and deserving of our attention, resurgent, or new and compelling. We will consider submissions from any and all student/working scholars that contribute to this objective.
Submissions may be written, photographic, or multimedia (written with visual, audio, and/or video components). We are currently accepting submissions for the following categories:
- student submissions (c. 150–200 words) for our "Thoughts from the Field" column [on the topic of music and community/activism, focusing on the effects of our public research/activity, especially at this time in a world where values like pluralism and diversity are threatened]
- student articles/editorials (c. 500–750 words) [discussing experiences, ideas, and/or viewpoints on a topic of personal interest and related to contemporary ethnomusicological practice]
- professional submissions either for our "Dear SEM"column (c. 250 words) [discussing SEM's recent statement of inclusivity (Position Statement in Response to the 2016 U.S. Presidential Election), and, in particular, how students can put it into practice in the classroom, the field, and scholarship];
or individual editorials (c. 500–750 words) [addressing issues and providing advice for graduate students in regards to the challenges and significance of studying and practicing ethnomusicology today]
If you would like to submit a piece, please contact the editor at firstname.lastname@example.org. We also welcome any other ideas, comments, and questions. Submissions should follow Chicago Manual of Style, 16th edition (author-date). Files should be submitted in .docx (text), .jpg (photography), .mp3 of .flac (audio), and .mp4 (video) formats and received no later than Friday, April 14, 2017. Be sure to include your contact information and university affiliation in your email. Please feel free to share this call widely.
