The new issue of Smithsonian Folkways Magazine is all about experimental music!

Experimental music has a long and fascinating history in Smithsonian Folkways. From the innovative and avant-garde to the playful and political, the new issue spotlights unique stories of experimentalism through rich multimedia narratives. The cover story by professor David Bernstein provides a historical summary of highlights from the collection. Artist Erdem Helvacıoğlu reflects on the pioneering work of Turkish American composer/producer İlhan Mimaroğlu. Folkways artist Sorrel Doris Hays writes about how Henry Cowell’s unconventional compositions and performance techniques inspired her own artistic development. Electro-acoustic pioneer Jon Appleton shares his experience working with Folkways founder Moses Asch as a fellow and curator of electronic music.
