The Society for Ethnomusicology is pleased to announce that it will be one of five academic music societies participating in the upcoming ICTM Forum to be held in Beijing, China, 11-14 July 2018. This 2nd collaboration between the SEM and ICTM will continue the tradition of international exchange among an interdisciplinary group of scholars engaging with current issues in ethnomusicology in addition to the Beijing host’s theme of “music and dance in the internet era.”

SEM has been allocated 20 positions at the conference. Paper proposals from SEM may relate to the ICTM Forum’s broad theme, “Approaches to Research on Music and Dance in the Internet Era,” or be on a more general topic. For a more detailed description of the ICTM Forum theme, please click here.

SEM Proposal Guidelines

Proposals from SEM members are now welcome for individual papers (20 minutes, followed by 10 minutes of questions) and panels (60 minutes, followed by up to 30 minutes of discussion).

Paper proposals should be submitted by Friday, 1 December 2017. Each proposal should contain:

  • name, title, affiliation (or descriptor of speaker’s choice), and contact email for each speaker;

  • an abstract summarizing the paper or panel. Abstracts for individual papers should be 200-250 words in length; those for panels should be of 750-1,000 words;

  • use “SEM-ICTM Beijing Forum Proposal” as the subject line for your email;

  • include abstract and all information in the body of your email; do not use an attachment;

  • prospective participants should be members in good standing of SEM.

Proposals should be submitted to the SEM Business Office at sem@indiana.edu. The office will send an acknowledgement of receipt of your email. The Board of the Society for Ethnomusicology will serve as the Program Selection Committee for all SEM submissions to the Beijing conference.
