Alice Rogers, University of Maryland in College Park

Alice Rogers is currently pursuing a masters degree in ethnomusicologyfrom the University of Maryland in College Park. She graduated Summa Cum Laude from Duquesne University with a bachelor of music in music technology with a concentration in electronic performance. She conducted fieldwork with an old-time music ensemble in Southern Maryland during the fall of 2012, which resulted in a paper she presented at the Mid-Atlantic SEM Conference in 2013 entitled "Rigid Rules for a Casual Gathering: Etiquette and Community in the Bushwood Mill Jam Sessions." Her upcoming thesis will be based on fieldwork and historical research on protest music from the Pittston Strike of 1989. Alice's‪current research interests include Appalachian music, protest song, politically-motivated music, and the use of technology in musical transmission.

I am interested in serving as Secretary/Treasurer on the SEM Student Union's executive board because I feel that it is important for students to connect and communicate with one another while pursuing research goals and careers in ethnomusicology. Sharing experiences, advice, and thoughts will help us encompass a wider and more representative number of ethnomusicological perspectives as a section of SEM, and this type of communication will also help us on our individual paths as ethnomusicologists. If selected for this position, I would not only continue the work of my predecessors by keeping well-organized financial records and accurate minutes, but I would also try to find ways to encourage members of the SEM Student Union to discuss various ideas, problems, and questions that may come up in the course of pursuing a degree in ethnomusicology. I think the use of electronic media would be a great space for this sort of interaction.
