The mission of the Religion, Music and Sound Section is to support the study of sacred music, broadly defined, including religious, devotional, ritual, ceremonial, and spiritual musics in their cultural and social contexts. The section promotes the study of these musics in the following ways:

  • Providing a forum for discussion, interaction, and networking between scholars of sacred and religious musics
  • Sponsoring panels at the annual SEM conference
  • Helping in the organization of conference panels as well as other events
  • Serving as an information-gathering venue about publications and events of interest to our members
  • Maintaining an online presence for continued contact throughout the year
