Wild beasts surrounded him to eat his body
And he chased them away with his hands and said with his mouth:
My beasts, what have I done to you?

(Baud-Bovy 1972: 152)

I saw George Ploussios asleep on the mountain
He had the air for a blanket and stones for a mattress
And his silver sword for a pillow
I see him from afar and I approach him
I approach him and tell him: "Health, George,
What are you doing on this dry pasture?"
"They stole my flock of muttons and I have come searching for it
I searched for them north, south, and I did not find them,
But as the sun was setting on the mountain tops
I heard a stone rolling on the side of Angathopi"

When the weather will clear up, so that the winds might stop
For the ships to sail on the sea
To bring gunpowder and lead also to us;
For the partisans to take up arms, for the raïa to rebel,
For them to fight Turkey?

I saw some black smoke coming out at the end of the reed thicket
The reed thicket is big and there was a beast inside it
Three orphans left to go and kill it
But first they go to their mother to let her know:
"Give us, mother, your blessing"

What is it with you around here that makes your heart heavy
You do not eat, drink, nor make merry
Before Charon comes to get us and decimate us
And to decimate our families and choose the men
And take young men apt for the rifles?

Boys, what has happened to the brave men of the world?
You cannot see them among us nor elsewhere
Over there at the end of the sea-shore at the end of the world
They are building an iron castle to hide from Charon
And Charon becomes a fly

"Fortress, where are your towers and your belfries
And where are your valiant ones, the handsome brave ones?"
"The black earth and Hades covered with cobwebs enjoy them,
My valiant ones, the handsome brave ones
I have no hatred for the Turks nor for Charon
I only have hatred and malevolence for the Greek traitor
[Who is] the one who denounced them"

"Hey you who descended from the world of the living
Come in and rest; I want to ask you
Whether you have seen if the sky is standing and the world of the living is standing
And if they christen children and build monasteries
And if the wives of the brave ones are marrying again"
"May the sky and the world of the living endure
and may they christen children and build monasteries
And may the wives of the brave ones get married again
And so may I return to the world of the living"

Archons of Salonika, all, small and great,
My son mounted on a horse to go to war
He carries lutes and instruments, instruments of all types
And where he stops, my son plays the instruments
The sky resonates, the earth moves and all the world trembles

Performer: Sifis Kandilierakis.
