Purpose: To provide Annual Meeting travel support to students from groups that have experienced discrimination. Preference will be given to graduate students and to individuals who are delivering a presentation at the meeting.
Eligibility: Students from groups that have experienced discrimination, such as discrimination in terms of race/ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, or disability. Applicants must be SEM members and cannot combine this award with an Annual Meeting Travel Fund Award.
Award amount: $750/each. (The number of awards each year will be based on the merit of the applications received and the availability of funds.)
Administration: The Annual Meeting Subvention Award Committee will review all applications and select awardees. Primary criteria for awards include financial need and potential to make a significant contribution to the field of ethnomusicology.
In addition to the $750 subvention, each awardee will be offered the opportunity to be paired for the Annual Meeting with a senior ethnomusicologist as a mentor. An awardee that elects this option will be provided with an additional $50 honorarium for a mentoring lunch.
Application Process: Applications may be made by one of two methods:
1) Nomination letter. A professor of the applicant writes a letter (maximum of 500 words) that states the individual’s student status, eligibility for an award, academic interests, and potential contributions to the field of ethnomusicology. The letter should also indicate whether the applicant will be presenting at the Annual Meeting and note access to any other travel funding.
