SEM-L Electronic List – Special Instructions

 This page provides information on 1) temporarily turning off messages, 2) unsubscribing from the list, 3) changing a subscription email address, 4) receiving a digest version of the list, and 5) reading posts in the list archive.

The below procedures require creating a password for your subscription e-mail address. If you have not done so, see IU List Service - First Password Page.

To Temporarily Turn Off Messages from SEM-L

You can turn off your SEM-L mailing list messages without unsubscribing. To temporarily stop receiving list messages, first go to the IU List Home Page. Login with your e-mail address and password. Then click the button labeled “Manage Your Subscriptions” on your left.

To turn off your messages, be sure the box is checked before the SEM-L entry under the “Manage Your Subscription” title. Under the “Suspend / Resume the selected lists” title, enter the dates through which you wish to turn off your messages. Then click the “Suspend my subscriptions” button. A listing should appear in the table indicating that the list is currently suspended.

To turn your mail back on, login and go to the “Manage Your Subscriptions” page and click the button labeled “Resume my subscriptions.” Note that you only need to do this if you wish your mail to resume before the suspension period is over. The table entry above should clear.

To Unsubscribe

To unsubscribe from SEM-L, send the following words in the subject line of a mail message addressed to iulist@iulist.indiana.edu. Notice that you are NOT sending this email to SEM-L.

Leave the body of the message blank.

IU List should send you a mail message acknowledging your request. If you receive an error message in response to your unsubscription request, please check whether the email address on the list is the address from which you sent the unsubscribe command. If the addresses are different, try again using the email address that you used to subscribe yourself. If that does not work, contact the list moderator (see contact information on main SEM-L page).

To Change Your Subscribed Email Address:

If you wish to receive your messages at a different address from the one at which you are currently subscribed, you will have to unsubscribe using the old email account and then subscribe using the new email account. See instructions above for how to unsubscribe and the instructions on the main SEM-L page for how to subscribe.

To Receive a Digest Version of SEM-L

When subscribed to a digest version of listserv posts, you have the advantage of receiving multiple posts (typically a day’s worth) in a single email message. To receive a digest version of the list, follow these instructions:

  1. Go to the IU List Home Page. Login with your e-mail address and password.
  2. Beneath the button labeled “Manage your subscriptions,” click the boldface sem-l listing. This will take you to the IU SEM-L Home Page.
  3. Click “Subscriber Options” on the left-hand side of the page.
  4. From the “Receiving Mode” drop-down menu, select “digest MIME format.”
  5. Click the “Update” button near the bottom of the page.

To Read the List Archive

Indiana University automatically archives all postings to SEM-L. To read the list archive, follow these instructions:

  1. Go to the IU List Home Page and log on.
  2. Beneath the button labeled “Manage your subscriptions,” click the boldface sem-l.
  3. In the left-hand menu, click the “Archive” link. The message index displays, organized by year and month.
  4. To browse the archives, click the desired month.
  5. To search the archives, click the “Search Archives” button in the upper right corner of the archives box.
