Ravi Shankar -- The Sounds of India Columbia CK 9296

This recording features Ravi Shankar, Sitar; Chatur Lal, Tabla; and N. C. Mullick, Tambura. Ravi Shankar is perhaps one of the most recognizable names in Indian music in the world today. This older recording examines the basic concepts of Raga, Tala, and the construction of music in the Hindusthani tradition. Examples are played and narration is provided by Ravi Shankar to illustrate these basic concepts. Short notes provided by Alan Hovhaness further help to explain these concepts.

This is a very useful recording for upper level students. The text and narration tend to be above the elementary students, though the music may be fascinating to them.
