Maria Mendonça

Educated at the University of York (UK) and Wesleyan University, and a recipient of a Post-doctoral Fellowship at the University of Chicago, Maria Mendonça teaches in the Anthropology and Music departments at Kenyon College (OH), where she holds the position of Henry Luce Associate Professor in Asian Music and Culture. 

She has worked as an ethnomusicologist in a variety of settings in the UK and US. In the UK, she was an Ethnomusicology Editor for the 2001 edition of The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, also establishing gamelan programs in the education departments at the Hallé Orchestra, Manchester, and St David’s Hall, Cardiff, as well as advising and leading projects involving gamelan for a range of British arts institutions, including Southbank Centre, London, and the BBC Symphony Orchestra.

Her research interests include Indonesia, music in transnational circulation, music in prison contexts, cultural policy, ethnomusicology and the public sector, and documentary film. Her articles have appeared in journals including Ethnomusicology, Asian Music, and the Journal of Applied Arts and Health. She is currently the Recording Review Editor for Ethnomusicology, and has previously served the Society as a member of the Seeger Prize Committee (2010-11), Member of Council (2010-13) and Chair of Council (2011-13). 

Colin Quigley is a Senior Lecturer at the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance and Emeritus Professor, UCLA. My graduate training, at Memorial University of Newfoundland (MA 1981) and UCLA (PhD 1987), encompassed folkoristics, ethnochoreology, and ethnomusicology. My work has always been centered around a nexus of the three: Close to the Floor: Folk Dance in Newfoundland (1985); Music from the Heart: Compositions of a Folk Fiddler (1995); Curator, 1999 Smithsonian Folklife Festival Romania Program; Music, Dance and Custom in Romania, EVIA collection contribution. My articles have appeared in Ethnomusicology, The Yearbook of Traditional Music, Journal of Folklore Research among others, including Irish, Romanian and Hungarian publications (in English and translation). I have been editor of Western Folklore and the founding editor of Ethnomusicology Ireland, the journal of the ICTM Ireland.

Most recently I have published journal articles on dance/music in Transylvania, Romania and Hungary, reassessing the legacies of national scholarship, investigating interethnicity and multinationalism, and characterizing current predicaments in cultural politics and policy. At UCLA I was Associate Professor in Dance Ethnology, joint faculty in Ethnomusicology, and core faculty in the World Arts and Cultures Program, an interdisciplinary undergraduate degree that became a department and home to the Culture and Performance Ph.D.

Since moving to Ireland in 2008 and taking a position as Course Director for Ethnomusicology at the University of Limerick, I have been teaching exclusively ethnomusicology graduate students and engaging more extensively with professional networks throughout Europe. I have been a member of SEM since graduate school and have served the Society previously as a member of the Council, Chair of the inaugural Nahumck Fellowship committee, Chair of the Irish Music SIG, and Local Arrangements Co-Chair for the recent SEM-ICTM Forum.
