Who We Are and What We Do

The Applied Ethnomusicology Section is open to all members of the Society for Ethnomusicology. We help put music to use in a variety of contexts, academic and otherwise, including education, cultural policy, conflict resolution, medicine, arts programming, and community music. Members in the Applied Ethnomusicology Section work to organize panel sessions and displays at SEM conferences that showcase this kind of work and to discuss the issues that surround it, as well as to foster connections between individuals involved in applied work and between individuals and institutions.

AE Section Activities

SPONSORSHIP, AWARDS AND GRANTS

At the annual SEM conference, the AE Section sponsors pre-planned panels and forums, awards prizes and cash for the best AE presentations, and distributes SEM conference travel grants to AE Section members. Money distributed for prizes, travel grants, and special events sponsored by the AE Section comes from member dues, which are set at $10-$15 per year.

*If you are planning a panel or forum for the annual SEM conference and would lke AE Section sponsorship, please get in touch with the AE Section co-chairs at least a week before the deadline for submitting panel or forum proposals through the SEM website.

*Announcements concerning the procedures for the annual SEM conference AE Section presentation prizes and travel grants are generally circulated to SEM members in late summer/early fall after the preliminary SEM conference program has been posted to the SEM website and people are making their travel plans.
