ISAMS Graduate Student Symposium—Music and Class


The Illinois Student Association of Music Scholars (ISAMS) is a graduate student organization at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. We seek to augment the academic experience, scholarship, and community of students in musicology (historical and ethnographic) and related fields of music scholarship, including music theory, music education, and composition. We invite graduate students in any field to submit paper abstracts for our Graduate Symposium to be held April 21-22, 2017 at UIUC. The symposium will feature a keynote address by Dr. Gillian Rodger (University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee).

This year’s theme is music and socioeconomic class. Our aim is to explore how class in all its various manifestations, music, and related expressive culture are intrinsically intertwined in such a way that a critical look at one can tell us more about the others.

Within the field of sociology, a range of scholars have theorized class as a relational explanation of economic life chances, a categorized system of inequality and difference, and a foundation of oppression and exploitation. How might we draw new relevance from these ideas and more recent paradigms in our analyses of music and performance as socially, geographically, and historically situated?

We encourage students to submit abstracts that explicitly or implicitly consider socioeconomic class and music and related expressive culture. Possible topics include but are not limited to:

● Exploration of socioeconomic class levels, statuses, roles, and mobility

● Class and the transmission of musical knowledge

● Class and the positionality of music scholarship

● Aesthetics of class as revealed through music, expressive culture, and the creative process

● Intersectionality of class and expressive culture with other aspects of social identity

ISAMS invites proposals for twenty-minute papers featuring original research on the conference topic. Proposals should include name, institutional affiliation, degree program (e.g., MA, MM, MFA, PhD, DMA), paper title, and an abstract of no more than 250 words. Proposals should be submitted to isamscholars@gmail.com by January 17, 2016 DEADLINE EXTENDED: February 17. Applicants will be notified of their proposal’s status by March 1, 2017.
