Program Highlights:
Study Japanese traditional instruments at one of Japan’s most prestigious koto schools.
Rehearse and perform with other musicians in sankyoku ensemble settings.
Attend evening lectures by top scholars on various topics in Japanese music.

Seiha Hōgaku-kai, established in 1913 at Zenkō-ji Temple in Nagano, is Japan's largest and most prestigious koto school, offering a comprehensive course of study in both traditional and contemporary koto and shamisen music.

In 2016, due to increasing world-wide awareness and interest in Japanese music, Seiha Hōgaku-kai established an intensive English language summer school program for the study of classical sankyoku ensemble music. Up to now there have been no professional level hōgaku training programs offered in English in Japan, and this program addresses that need.

We offer a one-week, all day intensive training program on the 13-string koto, shamisen with voice, kokyū and shakuhachi with focus on ensemble playing. The evenings feature academic lectures on topics related to Japanese music, and the program culminates in a final student concert.

Seiha’s artistic excellence and high reputation in the Japanese hōgaku world ensures that this program provides its participants with the best possible hands-on training in Japanese music.
