CFP: SEM SEC Regional Conference in New Orleans "Movement(s), Upheaval, and Migration"

CFP: “Movement(s), Upheaval, and Migration,” SEMSEC Annual Meeting 2018

The Society for Ethnomusicology, Southeast and Caribbean Chapter (SEMSEC), is pleased
to announce the call for proposals for its 2018 annual meeting, to be held at Tulane University in 
New Orleans, Louisiana, on Friday March 16 through Sunday, March 18, 2018.

The program committee welcomes proposals on any and all music-related topics. However, we 
especially encourage submissions that engage in some way with our selected title, “Movement(s), 
Upheaval, and Migration.” We selected this title to celebrate the rich musical cultures of our host 
city as well as our diverse regional membership. In addition to being a
southern musical center, New Orleans has served as a cultural crossroad between the South and the Caribbean for generations. “Movement(s), Upheaval, and Migration” speaks to common themes of musical traditions in the wake of societal changes, political unrest, natural disasters, and 
cultural revival impacting communities of the U.S. South and across several Caribbean nations. Our region is also home to a wealth of dance cultures that have impacted moves and movements all over the world from carnival culture and urban club scenes, to the sacred circles of the ring shout, pow-wow and peristil. Proposals that explore research on local and regional music cultures are welcomed, and particularly those who touch on the conference themes through the following broader topics:

Music & Migration: Music in migrant communities within the Caribbean; the New Orleans &
Caribbean connection; music community and preservation after natural disaster; music of the rural 
south; music and return migration; Appalachian music in transition.

Heritage Communities of Resistance: Maroon communities, Gullah Geechee of the Cultural Heritage Corridor; music of migrant workers; cultural performances and tourism; music of the Delta; island music cultures.

Music & Protest: Music and the Black Lives Matter movement; music and Confederate monument/flag protests; music and gentrification/community displacement; music and “The New South”; music and politics; music and nation building; music and terrorism.

Music on the Big & Small Screen: Southern music documentaries; Louisiana on television (i.e., True Blood, Treme, Queen Sugar, The Originals, American Horror Story: Coven, NCIS: New Orleans); the music of films set in Louisiana.

Regional Dance Cultures: New Orleans second line, Mardi Gras, bounce, zydeco; club scenes of Miami, Memphis and Atlanta; dance and carnival; Native American dance traditions; dance and worship arts; clogging and square dance; historically black college and university marching bands/dance teams; folk dance; fraternity/sorority stepping; soca; calypso; merengue; dancehall;
contested dance spaces and venues.

The Program Committee welcomes proposals from scholars working in a wide range of
fields including ethnomusicology, musicology, music education, music theory, dance, art history,
political science, anthropology, sociology, area studies, media studies, folklore, performance studies, southern studies, Caribbean studies, and popular culture. Proposals from graduate and
undergraduate students are particularly encouraged.

E-mail all proposals as an MS Word (.doc or .docx) attachment by Friday, December 1, 2017,
8PM EST with ‘SEMSEC NOLA ABSTRACT’ in the subject heading to Birgitta Johnson, program chair at birgittamusic@gmail.com. Participants will be notified by December 29, 2017.

Submission guidelines

Proposed submissions should indicate one of the following formats:

•   individual scholarly papers (20-minute presentation, 10-minute discussion)
•   organized panels of 3 or 4 papers, or 3 papers and a discussant
•   forum/roundtable-format discussions linked to conference themes
•   other creative presentations or workshops involving performance, scholarship, and discussion

Please include the following with all proposals:

•   Name
•   Presentation title
•   Institutional affiliation
•   Mailing address
•   Email address
•   Phone number

For individual paper presentations, please submit an abstract of no more than 250 words.
Abstracts should clearly indicate a central argument, research methodology, and conclusions. 
Abstracts that exceed the word limit will not be considered.

Each member of an organized panel must submit an individual paper proposal (see submission 
guidelines above for individual scholarly papers) and the panel chair/organizer must submit a panel abstract of no more than 250 words. Organizers of forum/roundtables should submit an abstract of no more than 250 words detailing the central theme, purpose, and scope of the forum, with a preliminary list of participants. The suggested forum format is 90- minutes, with four to six panelists including a discussant; other options will be considered.
Proposals for workshops and demonstrations of either 20-minute or 50-minute duration will also be 
considered. Include in your 250-word abstract estimated set-up time, and any pertinent logistical 
considerations, spatial or otherwise. Abstracts that exceed the word limit will not be considered.

Students interested in submitting their presentations for consideration for the Dale A. Olsen Prize 
should submit papers including AV examples to the SEMSEC Secretary/Treasurer/ Program Chair/DAO Prize Chair electronically within seven (7) days after the final day of the annual meeting. Contact information should appear clearly within the e-mail, including name, institutional affiliation and phone number.
