The Special Interest Group for the Music of Iran and Central Asia (SIGMICA) is interested in sponsoring proposals for the SEM Annual Meeting to be held in Albuquerque, New Mexico, November 15–18, 2018.

SIGMICA welcomes proposals for papers, panels, and roundtables based on ethnographic and/or theoretical research on music and the performing arts in the following geographical areas:

  • the Persian- and Turkic-speaking worlds
  • the Caucasus region
  • the post-Soviet “stans” of Central Asia
  • Afghanistan
  • Siberia
  • Mongolia
  • Xinjiang (Chinese Central Asia)

Our SIG would particularly like to solicit thematic proposals addressing theories, concepts, and other issues of broad interest to the membership of SEM, including but certainly not limited to such topics as musical heritage, music and religion, music and politics, and the relationships between music and poetry.

Please submit abstracts to SIGMICA co-chairs Elise Anderson (andersem@indiana.edu) and Polina Dessiatnitchenko (polina.dessiatnitchenko@mail.utoronto.ca) by Friday, February 2. Applicants will be notified of potential sponsorship by Friday, February 9. Please note that SIG sponsorship will not affect the decisions of the SEM program committee.
