SEM is pleased to announce that long-time Society member Edwin Seroussi, director of the Jewish Music Research Centre at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, has been awarded the prestigious Israel Prize. Considered to be Israel’s highest civilian honor, the Israel Prize acknowledges Seroussi’s longstanding research on Sephardic and Mizrahi musics. In making the announcement, Education Minister Naftali Bennett addressed in particular Seroussi’s research on areas of Jewish expressive culture that have not been “sufficiently expressed,” in addition to acknowledging his scholarly contributions as a significant way to “telling the complete Jewish story east and west." Congratulations to Edwin Seroussi!
