Darkwater is a festival based at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke that celebrates women in music through papers, panels, and performances. The Program Committee invites proposals from scholars and advanced students for individual papers (20 minutes + 10-minute discussion); organized sessions of 3-4 papers on a single topic; or roundtable discussions in the fields of musicology, music theory, ethnomusicology, gender and women’s studies, history, sociology, or related fields. Proposals should fall under the general topic “women in music”, and interdisciplinary approaches are welcomed.

Abstracts should be no more than 500 words. Sessions and round tables should include an abstract for each panelist as well as one for the session as a whole. Darkwater WIM invites submissions from presenters of all genders, races, and sexual orientations.

Completed proposals should include an abstract with title and AV needs.

Please email proposals for papers and panels to Sarah Busman at darkwaterwim@gmail.com with the subject “Proposal for Paper.”

Our 2019 Keynote Speaker is Dr. Elena Ruehr, composer and professor at MIT. Dr. Ruehr’s keynote is supported by the UNCP Department of Music and the UNCP College of Arts and Sciences.
