Faculty of Music, University of Cambridge, 22 March 2019. In association with the Institute of Musical Research

The aim of this workshop is to address the limitations of Euro-North American academia when addressing art music from outside Europe and North America. The discussion will centre on the study of art music in any context that has been labelled as 'Non-Western'.

Suggested themes for submissions include, but are not limited to:

- Disciplinary differences between musicology and ethnomusicology
- Definitions of art music
- Notions of the 'West'
- Discourses on canon and repertoire in and outside the West
- Non-Western art music
- Art music in non-Western contexts
- New approaches to the study of art music outside the West

Abstracts of no more than 300 words should be sent to nonwesternartmusic@gmail.com by the 15th of December. Please include title, name, institutional affiliation, email address, and a short biography (50-80 words). Applicants will be notified of the outcome by mid-January. We expect papers to be 20 minutes in length allowing for 10 minutes of questions. The workshop will take place at the Faculty of Music (University of Cambridge) on March 22, 2019.
