Folk Alliance International (FAI) together with the Society for Ethnomusicology (SEM) and Smithsonian Folkways Recordings, are pleased to invite you to a global Ethnomusicology Summit on Thursday, February 14th, 2019, taking place as part of FAI's 31st conference in Montréal, Québec, Canada.

The FAI conference is the world's largest gathering of the folk music industry and community and takes place February 13 - 17, 2019, at the Fairmont Queen Elizabeth Hotel. Welcoming 2,855 delegates from 35 countries, it is the premier career development, networking, and showcasing hub for folk musicians and professionals.  Please view our 2019 promo reel here.

The summit is a 3-hour in-depth gathering of Ethnomusicologists. The focus of discussion is a critique of the term “World Music." While the term is widely used in an effort to appreciate and include non-Western music, many academics and artists have expressed aversion for the term citing the reinforcement of Orientalist representations of the rest of the world. The summit will also discuss the culture of the industry and how concepts of “world music” and “folk music” bolster or hinder musicians involved in their making.

Your voice is critical to this conversation; we are offering a special discounted registration for all summit participants, which includes access to the entire conference.

About the 2019 FAI Conference

Returning to Canada in 2019, the FAI conference theme, The Spirit of Creativity, is an exploration of the artistic process from inspiration to vocation and a collective conversation about innovation, collaboration, and spirituality in art.

Host city Montréal is known for its vibrant music scene and public celebration of the arts. In addition, our conference hotel, the Fairmont Queen Elizabeth, will be celebrating the 50th anniversary of John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s bed-in at the hotel where they wrote: “Give Peace a Chance.”
