The Copenhagen-based organization Freemuse has released a new annual report: The State of Artistic Freedom 2019 - Whose Narratives Count? The report analyses 673 cases of violations of artistic freedom occurring in 80 countries throughout 2018, identifies key challenges for artists’ freedom of expression, and points out violation patterns and trends. Additionally, the report calls for accountability for these violations and illuminates counter-terrorism legislation as a troubling and growing method of violating freedom of artistic expression.

On April 3, 2018, Freemuse and the Society for Ethnomusicology signed a memorandum of understanding for collaboration in support of freedom of artistic expression worldwide. In recognition of mutual goals of advocacy for musicians and other artists, the two organizations are sharing information on the research of their members and associates, contributing to each other’s publications and events, and exploring possibilities for collaborative research projects and activism.

At the SEM Annual Meeting in Albuquerque in November 2018, SEM President Gregory Barz hosted an open forum with Freemuse Executive Director Srirak Plipat. Dr. Plipat also spoke about Freemuse’s goals during the General Membership Meeting and encouraged support from SEM members.
