Episode 10 of Ethnomusicology Today, “Musical Participation and Global Health in the Gambia with Bonnie McConnell,” is now available on iTunes, Spotify, and on the SEM website.

In this episode we talk with Bonnie McConnell about her article, “Performing ‘Participation’: Kanyeleng Musicians and Global Health in the Gambia,” which was published in the Summer 2017 issue of Ethnomusicology. Informed by her fieldwork among kanyeleng performers, Bonnie examines how community-oriented and participatory-based musical performances impact global health initiatives. By investigating the relationships between kanyeleng musicians, government officials, health workers,and local communities, Bonnie discusses the vital importance of musical performance and participation in local health education and effective global health strategies.
