Bruno Nettl died this morning in Urbana, Illinois, where he lived and worked since 1964. Active in what became the Society for Ethnomusicology from its very beginnings in 1953, Bruno was our last surviving link to SEM’s living history. He mentored scores of students who went on to found programs around the country and world. We have all benefited from the wisdom, signature humor, and gentle humility that Bruno shared with us in countless books, articles, chapters, encyclopedia entries, lectures, and conference presentations. Active to the end, just two months ago he presented at the 2019 SEM Conference in Bloomington on the Past Presidents Roundtable. Many among our membership will have treasured memories of their first SEM conference, meeting Bruno, and receiving his full attention if only for a few moments. Generous in service to SEM, he is the only individual to have served as the Editor of Ethnomusicology twice, first from 1962-1966 and then from 1999-2002. He was the President of the Society from 1969-1971. Bruno Nettl, we miss you; we will not forget you.

- Tim Cooley, SEM President

The "theory of just desserts" worked because of his inventor - Bruno Nettl. I am sure that he is an "encantado" (enchanted) now. Adriana Fernandes.
