Dear Colleagues of the Society for Ethnomusicology:

The Society for Ethnomusicology Board of Directors stands in support and solidarity with our Black SEM colleagues in the wake of the murders of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and many, many others at the hands of police. These acts of violence must be interpreted in the context of ongoing systemic anti-Black racism, which is also manifesting itself in the ravages of COVID-19 that have disproportionately impacted communities of color. This racism is unacceptable and must be eliminated.

We must commit and re-commit to anti-racist work within our scholarly society. We recognize that members of SEM who do not identify as Black, Indigenous, or people of color have a particular ongoing responsibility to learn to recognize and eliminate such acts of racial discrimination and violence within our own scholarly society, our institutions, and our broader communities.

We, the Board of SEM, are committed to upholding SEM’s principles of fairness and inclusion. We are currently in the process of reviewing our society’s procedures (e.g., how prizes are defined, how committees are populated) to identify and eliminate systemic racism within SEM. We also commit to continuing our conversations with members to determine how best to support you now in actions, not just in words. At this moment, we mourn the violent loss of Black life, join in protest, and pledge our support now and moving forward.

In Solidarity,

SEM Board of Directors
Tim Cooley, President
Gregory Melchor-Barz, Past-President
Alejandro L. Madrid, 1st Vice-President
Lei X. Ouyang, 2nd Vice-President
Noriko Manabe, Treasurer
Tes Slominski, Secretary
Jean Ngoya Kidula, Member-at-Large, Groups and Professional Development
Sarah Morelli, Member-at-Large, Prizes
Stephen Stuempfle, Executive Director
