The Society for Ethnomusicology Disability and Deaf Studies Special Interest Group invites members to submit abstracts to be selected for a panel and roundtable proposal for the SEM 63rd Annual Meeting on November 15-18, 2018 in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

General Call for Abstracts
We seek papers that engage with topics of Disability and Deaf Studies such as:

- Topics of ethnomusicological intersectionality that address issues of Deafness and/or disability in relation to gender identity, race, ethnicity, and sexual orientation
- Representations of invisible disabilities, chronic illness, and mental health
- Performance of disability and Deaf identities in popular culture including film, television, theater, and the media
- Creating disability and Deaf cultures through performance
- Disability aesthetics in musical performance
- Musical advocacy
- Intersections of pedagogy and Deaf and disability cultures

Roundtable Call for Abstracts: Intersections of Disability and Deaf Studies, Music Therapy, and Medical Ethnomusicology

This roundtable seeks participants who are interested in exploring the resonances between Medical Ethnomusicology, Music Therapy, and Disability and Deaf Studies. How are these disciplines speaking to one another in theory and in practice – and how could these conversations be enriched, (re)vitalized and multiplied through current or future research? We welcome individual paper submissions that draw on ethnographic and/or theoretical research within one or more of these fields. We are particularly interested in hearing from those who are thinking about how a Disability- and Deaf Studies-inspired epistemology could complement, supplement, or challenge work in Music Therapy and Medical Ethnomusicology in productive ways, or vice versa.

Please submit an abstract of 200-250 words. Be sure to include “roundtable 2018” or “panel proposal 2018” in the subject line. Submissions are due by January 26 to ddstudiessem@gmail.com. Applicants will be notified of the committee’s decision by February 9.
