CALL FOR APPLICATIONS: Harvard Music Lab Summer Internship 2019

At the Music Lab, we study the basic science of music in an effort to understand how and why humans produce and perceive music at all ages and across all cultures. We are recruiting undergraduate research assistants in the fields of cognitive science, psychology, evolutionary biology, music theory, ethnomusicology, anthropology, linguistics, and computer science to spend their summer with us!

Summer interns will be working on studies investigating the impact of music on infant affect and behavior, universals and cross-cultural variation in music perception and music production, people's use of music in daily life, and long-term effects of the use of music in the home on parent and infant health. Prospective interns are encouraged to read our papers at themusiclab.org before applying.

As an intern, you will have the opportunity to work on both ongoing and new studies from design to manuscript stage. Here's a non-exhaustive list of example projects we'll be working on this summer:

1. In-lab studies exploring the degree to which music can function as a tool for parents to use when their infants are upset.

2. Crowd-sourced online studies about music categorization and perception using both traditional study pools of online workers and "citizen science" approaches.

3. Mobile app-based data collection from parents of infants and young children concerning infant/child temperament, parenting behaviors, and their relations to one another.

4. Studies examining the possibility of links between synchronous activity (music or otherwise) and cooperation, prosociality, and interpersonal affinity.

5. Expanding our diverse collection of audio recordings for the Natural History of Song Project and conducting phylogenetic analyses of the corpus.

6. Interns are encouraged to propose their own independent projects building on current research at The Music Lab, especially if these projects are amenable to online data collection.

The internship is 10 weeks long, from 10 June to 16 August 2019 and is open to both undergraduate and graduate students. Interns will work 40 hours per week. Some evening and weekend work may be required. All applicants are encouraged to apply for funding from their home university; we will support such applications and for exceptional students, we may supplement external funding with up to a $1,800 stipend. Depending on performance and contribution levels, co-authorship on papers is also a possibility.

Departing from traditional and functional approaches to language, cognitive linguistics provides teachers a unique way of exploring meaning and the relationship between thought and language. Recent research shows that applying a cognitive perspective in the classroom has very clear benefits for all teachers interested in literacy. However, as this is a relatively new field, the parameters have not yet been fully agreed upon by linguists. Therefore, this event is a step towards achieving more clarity and consensus, as well as offering established researchers, ECRs, postgraduate researchers and those interested in embarking on research in this area a space in which to discuss how a research agenda might be usefully taken forward.

· Hands on workshops will allow you to work along side Balinese with activities such as offering making, basket weaving, painting, etc.

· Rather than tourist performances you will attend actual temple ceremonies in a manner respectful of the culture. Cudamani members will serve as guides and cultural resources.

· A rich array of NGOs is tackling environmental problems in Bali today. Emiko will introduce you to some of the important players such as village farmers who struggle to reintroduce traditional organic rice growing techniques, or the heartwarming a sea turtle egg rescue program, or health initiative lead by expat health care professionals.

· Cudamani members and guest ACE Lecturers will offer insight and opportunities for discussion.

Why this course?
A consistent problem in the study of non-Western music is the inability of educators to teach musics that are not from their cultural heritage in a manner that is consistent with the values, ethos, and stylistic approaches of that culture. Many educators teach such cultures largely from a Western perspective, without really understanding themselves the culture whose music they are teaching. These series of workshops are designed to provide educators with the knowledge and tools to teach Caribbean music in a manner that is better aligned with Caribbean ways of knowing and being. All classes include Caribbean history as well as pedagogical methods for teaching Caribbean music in the diaspora. Topics are explored from throughout the Caribbean and circum-Caribbean. Ethnomusicologist and Kodály certified music educator Dr. Danielle Brown teaches the course; where appropriate master artists are invited to add knowledge and depth to the subject matter.
Who should take this course?

Transnational Connections: Musical Dialogues Between Global Peripheries International Summer Worksho

Transnational Connections: Musical Dialogues Between Global Peripheries International Summer Workshop

School of Arts, University of Haifa, July 3-4, 2017

The Forum for Contemporary Ethnomusicology is pleased to announce our second international summer workshop, in conjunction with the Music Department, School of Arts, University of Haifa. The theme of the workshop will be “Transnational connections: musical dialogues between global peripheries”. While transnational frameworks often highlight exchanges along axes of center-periphery, global North-global South etc, we would like to illuminate musical dialogues that operate between peripheries. How might such thinking might contribute to novel understanding of musical activity in multiple localities? What are the methodological challenges that transnational fieldwork poses to ethnomusicologists? How do processes such as musicians’ translocation and music circulation that crisscross national and cultural boundaries change over historical periods?

The workshop will include seminars on theoretical and conceptual issues, methodological and practical sessions on virtual ethnography, a panel on career skills for graduate students, and student presentations.

As in previous summer workshop, the heart of the program will be a masterclass, led by our
distinguished guest: Dr Rachel Harris – SOAS, University of London.

The workshop will be held at the University of Haifa. Costs for the workshop are 100 NIS (25
USD). Participants are responsible for arranging accommodation: where possible we will organize homestays/housing in the University of Haifa (subject to availability).

The workshop language – presentations and discussion – will be English.

The workshop is open to ethnomusicologists (and scholars in adjacent fields) at all stages of their career. Graduate students and postdoctoral scholars are particularly invited to present their research (via a 20-minute paper) or to serve as a discussant in a panel. We encourage presentations relating to the main topic of the workshop, but suggestions of presentations on any topic will be considered.

All applicants should fill in the following form including an abstract (300 words) for those wishing to present a paper. Applications are due by May 1, 2017; paper presenters will be notified of acceptance by May 15, 2017. For enquiries please contact Yair Hashachar: hashachar@gmail.com.
