Wong Tolbert Student Paper Prize

The Section on the Status of Women (SSW) of the Society for Ethnomusicology invites submissions for the Wong Tolbert Student Paper Prize. The purpose of the Wong Tolbert Prize is to recognize the most distinguished student paper presented at the Annual Meeting of the Society for Ethnomusicology on women and music that demonstrates a deep engagement with social theory, including but not limited to feminist, queer, and/or gender theories. Applications should be submitted electronically to sswprize@gmail.com and will be accepted until December 20 each year. Please see the details below. 

Purpose: To recognize the most distinguished student paper on women and music that demonstrates a deep engagement with social theory, including but not limited to feminist, queer, and/or gender theories, presented at the SEM Annual Meeting.

Eligibility: Any student who presents, in person, a formal paper related to women and music that demonstrates a deep engagement with social theory, including but not limited to feminist, queer, and/or gender theories at the SEM Annual Meeting. A student shall be defined as a person pursuing an active course of studies in a degree program. This will include persons who are engaged in writing the doctoral dissertation but not those who are teaching full-time while doing so. Please note: The Wong Tolbert Student Paper Prize is separate from other prize competitions. Papers submitted for other prizes (such as the Seeger Prize) are also eligible for the Wong Tolbert Student Paper Prize.

Prize: A cash prize in an amount decided annually by the SSWSEM chair(s); the amount will not exceed $100.

Regularity: Annually. The prize may be withheld by the decision of the Wong Tolbert Prize Committee.

Application Process: To apply for the Wong Tolbert Student Paper Prize, please email the paper you presented at the SEM Annual Meeting to sswprize@gmail.com. The paper deposited is to be the version that was read at the conference and may not exceed twelve double-spaced pages (roughly 3,900 words). Candidates should include a cover page on their papers with the following information: name, address, email, institution and academic status. Candidates are encouraged to additionally submit electronic copies of audio or visual examples that were used in the presentation.
